Azure and 365 now hosted in the UK

Microsoft have become the first of the big three Microsoft/Amazon/Google to deliver data centres in the UK.

New data centres have been opened in London, Cardiff and Durham. Dynamics CRM has yet to be made available but is set to be online in the first half of 2017.

Until now UK customers have had to use data centres in Ireland and Amsterdam if they wanted to remain in the UK.  With Brexit looming this should provide UK customers with further confidence about their data.

Microsoft branded itself the “first global provider” of what it called a “complete cloud” from UK data centres.

No names mentioned, but that was likely a shot at Amazon with AWS. AWS is regarded as the leader in cloud services and has given Microsoft stiff competition; Azure is now rated by Gartner as a firm number two to AWS.

Nadella who first announced plans for the UK data centre in 2015 announced the UK setup after a AWS CTO Werner Vogels. announced plans for AWS UK data centres that are planned for late 2016/early 2017.

During the announcement of its UK Data Centre Microsoft listed Ministry of Defence as customer using Azure and Office 365.
