Openreach Big Switch off – Update

Hello, valued readers and customers of Mear Technology! We want to make you all aware of Changes to services offered by Mear Technology due to Openreach’s copper switch-off.

Embracing the Future: Say Goodbye to PSTN and Embrace Single-Order Broadband Services

As part of Openreach’s copper switch-off, we will no longer be offering PSTN and PSTN-based broadband services for sale from 5th September 2023. These include ADSL, FTTC and G.Fast. All these services are being replaced with new single-order equivalents. See below for more information.

But fear not! This transition opens the door to an array of cutting-edge single-order broadband services that are set to revolutionize the way you connect to the digital world. These services promise faster speeds, enhanced reliability, and future-proof internet connections, all bundled conveniently into a single package.

Your existing services will continue to work until Openreach switches off WLR PSTN services at your exchange.

Introducing the Next Generation: Single-Order Broadband Services

Imagine a seamless internet experience where you no longer require a separate PSTN phone line. Our new single-order broadband services encompass both the copper line and broadband connection, streamlining your connectivity needs. Whether you’re a small business seeking efficient solutions or a household craving uninterrupted streaming and browsing, our new offerings have you covered.

For most, this will be transitioning to FTTP (Fibre To The Premises). With various speeds available up to 1Gbps. For premises where Ultrafast (FTTP) is not available, you will be able to purchase single-order broadband services

Discover the versatility of our single-order broadband services, including:

  • SOGEA up to 80/20Mbps: Experience the speed you deserve.
  • SOADSL up to 24/2Mbps: Perfect for staying connected.
  • SOGFAST up to 300/50Mbps: Unleash the potential of high-speed internet.

What is Openreach’s copper switch-off

Openreach has 5500 telephone Exchanges around the country. The big switch-off is Openreach stripping all the copper and equipment from these Telephone Exchanges emptying the buildings and selling some of the buildings for redevelopment. Some Telephone Exchanges have been in place since the 19th Century and the existing analogue copper network in the UK has become increasingly expensive to maintain. Reliability and download speeds are often an issue for users depending on how far they are located from the closest telephone exchange.  As our demand for faster internet access grows, the time has come for the copper network to be upgraded to Fibre to the Premises (FTTP). There is no need to worry about these changes, in fact, it will mean your organisation will benefit from faster broadband speeds and higher-quality communication.
