<p>A US jury has just found Meta Platforms and Google liable for harm linked to addictive platform design, marking a pivotal moment in how social media companies may be held accountable.</p>



<p><strong>What Just Happened?</strong></p>



<p>A Los Angeles jury has concluded that Meta and Google were responsible for harm suffered by a young woman who developed compulsive use of Meta-owned Instagram and Google’s YouTube from an early age.</p>



<p>In the case, the US-based plaintiff, now aged 20 and identified in court documents as “Kaley” or “KGM” (her full identity has not been publicly disclosed), said she began using YouTube at six and Instagram at nine, later experiencing anxiety, depression and body image issues. Jurors awarded $6m in damages, split between compensatory and punitive elements, and found that Instagram and YouTube had acted with what was described in court as malice, oppression or fraud.</p>



<p>Crucially, the jury determined that the platforms’ design was a substantial factor in causing harm, rather than focusing on the specific content viewed.</p>



<p><strong>Why This Case Is Being Treated As A Milestone</strong></p>



<p>What makes this case so noteworthy is that it is one of the first cases of its kind to reach a full jury verdict, and it is widely seen as an early indicator of a much larger wave of litigation.</p>



<p>There are already more than a thousand similar claims progressing through US courts, involving families, schools and public authorities. Legal experts expect this ruling to influence how future cases are argued, how damages are assessed, and whether companies choose to settle rather than go to trial.</p>

<p>Meta has argued that mental health is complex and cannot be attributed to a single factor, while also pointing to its policies restricting under-13s from using its platforms. During testimony, its leadership maintained that their products are intended to have a positive impact.</p>



<p>Google’s defence focused on positioning YouTube as a video platform rather than a traditional social network, and questioned whether the usage patterns described in the case met the threshold for addiction.</p>

In one case in Canada, court filings indicate that a teenager who later carried out a fatal attack had previously used an AI chatbot to discuss feelings of isolation and violent thoughts, with conversations reportedly progressing towards how such an attack might be carried out.</p>



<p>In the United States, a separate case involved a man who developed an extended relationship with an AI chatbot, which he believed to be sentient. Legal filings suggest that these interactions escalated into instructions linked to a potential large-scale violent incident, which he prepared for before it failed to materialise.</p>



<p>In Europe, a teenager is reported to have used an AI chatbot over several months to help develop a manifesto and plan an attack on classmates, which was later carried out.</p>



<p>These cases differ in detail, but they show a consistent pattern. Conversations often begin with expressions of distress, isolation or anger. Over time, repeated interaction appears to reinforce those thoughts, sometimes progressing into more structured or actionable ideas.</p>

<p>Tesla has been granted a licence to supply electricity directly to homes and businesses in Britain, marking a significant step in the company’s effort to expand from electric vehicles into a full energy provider.</p>



<p><strong>Tesla Receives Approval To Supply Electricity</strong></p>



<p>Tesla subsidiary Tesla Energy Ventures has reportedly (according to reports by The Wall Street Journal) received approval from the UK energy regulator Ofgem to supply electricity to domestic and commercial customers across England, Scotland and Wales.</p>



<p>The licence allows Tesla to sell electricity directly to households and businesses in much the same way as established suppliers such as British Gas, EDF, E.ON and Octopus Energy. Northern Ireland is not included, as it operates under a separate electricity market.</p>



<p>Ofgem confirmed that the application underwent a full regulatory review between July 2025 and March 2026. The regulator assessed whether Tesla could meet the financial, operational and consumer protection standards required of all electricity suppliers in Britain.</p>



<p>As with any licensed supplier, Tesla must now comply with the UK’s strict energy market rules covering billing transparency, customer treatment, financial resilience and dispute resolution.</p>



<p><strong>A Long Term Strategy In The UK Energy Market</strong></p>



<p>Although the licence approval is new, Tesla has actually been building its presence in the British electricity sector for several years.</p>



<p>The company first obtained an electricity generation licence in 2020, allowing it to operate energy assets connected to the national grid. Since then Tesla has deployed large grid scale battery systems across the country using its Megapack technology.</p>



<p>One of the most notable projects is the Pillswood battery facility near Hull, which at the time of its launch in 2022 was one of Europe’s largest battery storage systems with a capacity of 196 megawatt hours.</p>



<p>Tesla has also been active in energy trading through its Autobidder software platform, which uses artificial intelligence to automatically buy and sell electricity in response to market conditions.</p>



<p>These developments laid the groundwork for the company to move into direct electricity supply.</p>



<p><strong>How Tesla’s Energy Model Works</strong></p>



<p>Tesla’s entry into the UK electricity market is likely to follow a model already used in Texas through its Tesla Electric service.</p>



<p>The approach combines several elements of Tesla’s broader energy ecosystem. These include home solar generation, battery storage, grid scale energy storage and software driven electricity trading.</p>



<p>Customers with Tesla Powerwall home batteries can store electricity generated by rooftop solar panels or purchased from the grid when prices are low. The stored energy can then be used later or exported back to the grid.</p>



<p>When large numbers of home batteries are connected together they can form what is known as a virtual power plant. This network of distributed energy storage can help stabilise the grid during periods of high demand while also generating revenue for participants.</p>



<p>Tesla’s Autobidder software manages the flow of electricity between batteries, the grid and wholesale markets in real time. The system automatically adjusts when energy is bought, stored or sold.</p>



<p>This model allows Tesla to treat energy not simply as a commodity delivered to homes, but as a dynamic resource that can be managed through software.</p>



<p><strong>Competition With Established Suppliers</strong></p>



<p>Obviously, Tesla’s arrival adds a new competitor to a crowded but rapidly evolving UK energy market.</p>



<p>Companies such as Octopus Energy have already demonstrated how software driven platforms and flexible tariffs can disrupt traditional energy supply models. Octopus has grown rapidly by combining renewable energy sourcing with advanced pricing systems and digital customer services.</p>



<p>In fact, Tesla and Octopus have previously worked together in Britain through the Tesla Energy Plan, which connected Powerwall owners to Octopus electricity tariffs.</p>



<p>However, now that Tesla can operate as a supplier in its own right, that partnership may evolve into direct competition.</p>



<p>The company will also compete with large incumbent utilities including British Gas, EDF and E.ON, which together supply millions of UK households.</p>

<p>Security researchers have demonstrated that a healthcare AI chatbot used in a US medical pilot can be manipulated into producing dangerous advice and misleading clinical notes, raising new questions about how safely AI can operate inside real healthcare systems.</p>



<p><strong>What Happened?</strong></p>



<p>Doctronic is a US telehealth platform built around an AI medical assistant (a medical chatbot) designed to help patients understand symptoms, manage conditions and connect with licensed doctors. The system is intended to act as a first point of contact in a digital care pathway, gathering patient information, offering guidance and preparing summaries for clinicians.</p>



<p>The idea of Doctronic is that patients can consult the AI about symptoms, medications or health concerns, and the system prepares structured information that helps doctors review cases more quickly.</p>



<p><strong>Can Be Manipulated</strong></p>



<p>However, the platform has recently attracted attention after being examined by Mindgard, an AI security company that specialises in testing the safety of AI systems.</p>



<p>In its research, Mindgard showed that the chatbot could be manipulated into spreading vaccine conspiracy theories, recommending methamphetamine as a treatment for social withdrawal, generating altered clinical guidance and even advising users how to cook methamphetamine.</p>



<p>According to the researchers, the issue stems from weaknesses in the chatbot’s internal instructions. As Mindgard explained:<em>&nbsp;“System prompts are the ‘keys to the kingdom’ when it comes to chatbots.”</em></p>



<p>The issue is particularly sensitive because Doctronic is currently being used in a pilot programme in the US state of Utah. The project operates within a regulatory “sandbox”, which allows new technologies to be tested under controlled conditions. As part of the trial, the system can assist with managing patient queries and renewing certain existing prescriptions before cases are reviewed by a human clinician.</p>



<p><strong>Why The Exploit Matters</strong></p>



<p>The issue is more serious than a typical chatbot error or AI hallucination because Doctronic sits inside a healthcare workflow. The system generates structured medical summaries and guidance that clinicians may review as part of patient care. If that output is manipulated or incorrect, it could appear credible enough to influence how a case is interpreted.</p>



<p>The researchers warned that this creates a new type of risk. As they put it,&nbsp;<em>“the most dangerous advice can come from the most well-intended of chatbots.”</em></p>



<p><strong>How The Prompt Injection Works</strong></p>



<p>According to Mindgard, the weakness it discovered involved a type of attack known as prompt injection.</p>



<p>Large language models (LLMs) operate based on internal instructions known as system prompts. These hidden instructions guide how the AI behaves, what rules it follows and what information it should refuse to provide.</p>



<p>Mindgard said it was able to trick the chatbot into revealing those internal instructions by manipulating how the conversation was framed. By convincing the system that the session had not yet begun, the researchers prompted it to recite its own internal instructions.</p>



<p>Once those instructions were exposed, the chatbot became easier to influence. The researchers then introduced fabricated regulatory bulletins and policy updates, which the system treated as legitimate information.</p>



<p>This allowed them to push the AI towards unsafe advice, including altered medication guidelines and fabricated medical guidance.</p>



<p><strong>Why SOAP Note Persistence Raises The Stakes</strong></p>



<p>The most concerning aspect of the experiment involved clinical documentation.</p>



<p>When users request a consultation with a human clinician, the system generates a structured medical summary known as a SOAP note. These documents summarise the patient’s situation and provide context before the appointment begins.</p>



<p>Mindgard found that manipulated information introduced during a compromised session could appear in these summaries and be passed on to clinicians.</p>



<p>In its report, the company warned that this could&nbsp;<em>“actively undermine the human professionals who might trust its authoritative-looking output.”</em></p>



<p>While the document itself is not a prescription, it becomes part of the clinical context surrounding the patient. In busy healthcare environments, that context can influence how clinicians interpret a case.</p>



<p>In other words, manipulated AI output could enter a legitimate medical workflow.</p>



<p><strong>What Utah Says About The Limits Of The Pilot</strong></p>



<p>Officials involved in the Utah pilot have, however, been keen to point out that the programme includes safeguards.</p>



<p>The trial is limited to renewing certain existing medications and does not allow prescriptions for controlled substances. Additional checks are also applied before any prescription renewal is approved.</p>



<p>Doctronic has said it has reviewed the research findings and continues to strengthen its safeguards against adversarial prompts and manipulation attempts.</p>



<p>Those limitations reduce the immediate risk in this particular pilot. However, the research highlights the types of challenges developers may face as AI systems move deeper into healthcare processes.</p>



<p><strong>The Wider Evidence On Medical Chatbot Risk</strong></p>



<p>This incident also aligns with concerns raised by other recent academic research.</p>



<p>A major study led by the University of Oxford earlier this year examined how people interact with AI systems when seeking medical advice. The study compared people using AI chatbots with those using traditional sources of information.</p>



<p>Researchers found that participants using AI tools were no better at identifying appropriate courses of action than those relying on other methods such as online searches. In some cases, users struggled to interpret the mixture of correct and incorrect advice produced by the models.</p>



<p>The study concluded that strong performance on medical knowledge tests does not necessarily translate into safe real-world interactions with patients.</p>

<p>Burger King is piloting OpenAI-powered headsets in 500 US restaurants that analyse drive-thru conversations, coach staff in real time and track hospitality signals such as whether employees say “please” and “thank you”.</p>



<p><strong>What Is BK Assistant and How Does It Work?</strong></p>



<p>The system, known as BK Assistant, sits inside employee headsets and a connected web and app platform. At its centre is a voice-enabled AI chatbot called “Patty”, built on OpenAI technology.</p>



<p>From the moment a customer pulls up at the drive-thru to the point they leave, the system analyses the interaction. It can prompt staff with recipe guidance, flag low stock levels such as a drink syrup running low, and alert managers if a customer reports an issue via a QR code.</p>



<p>It can also detect certain hospitality phrases. Burger King has confirmed that the system can identify words such as “welcome”, “please” and “thank you” as one signal among many to help managers understand service patterns.</p>



<p><strong>Designed To Streamline Operations</strong></p>



<p>Restaurant Brands International, the Miami-based parent company of Burger King, has described the platform as being&nbsp;<em>“designed to streamline restaurant operations”</em>&nbsp;and allow managers and teams to&nbsp;<em>“focus more on guest service and team leadership”.</em></p>



<p>The company has, however, been very keen to stress that the tool is not intended to record conversations for disciplinary monitoring or score individual workers. In statements to multiple outlets, Burger King has said:&nbsp;<em>“It’s not about scoring individuals or enforcing scripts. It’s about reinforcing great hospitality and giving managers helpful, real-time insights so they can recognise their teams more effectively.”</em></p>



<p>The pilot is currently running in 500 US restaurants. The wider BK Assistant platform is expected to be available to all US locations by the end of 2026.</p>



<p><strong>Why Now?</strong></p>



<p>Fast food is a high-volume, low-margin business where seconds matter. Drive-thru performance, order accuracy and customer satisfaction scores directly influence revenue.</p>

<p>Online backlash has been swift. Some critics have described the system as dystopian, arguing that analysing staff speech risks creating a culture of constant monitoring.</p>



<p>Burger King has attempted to position the system as supportive rather than punitive.&nbsp;<em>“We believe hospitality is fundamentally human,”</em>&nbsp;the company has said.&nbsp;<em>“The role of this technology is to support our teams so they can stay present with guests.”</em></p>



<p>From a management perspective, aggregated data on service patterns could be useful. From an employee perspective, the idea that an AI system is listening for key phrases raises legitimate concerns about trust and autonomy.</p>



<p>AI systems are not infallible. Speech recognition technology can struggle with regional accents, background noise or overlapping conversations, particularly in a busy drive-thru environment. A missed “thank you” or a misheard phrase could distort the data being fed back to managers, creating the risk of misleading signals. <p>For Burger King, the upside is operational consistency at scale. With thousands of restaurants, even marginal improvements in order accuracy or service speed can translate into significant revenue gains.</p>



<p>However, there’s also a reputational risk to coinsider here. If staff perceive the system as intrusive, morale could suffer. If customers view it as excessive monitoring, brand sentiment could be affected.</p>

<p>Burger King is not the only fast-food company using AI. Across the sector, major brands are investing heavily in artificial intelligence as they look for gains in speed, consistency and tighter operational control.</p>



<p>Yum Brands, the parent company of KFC, Taco Bell and Pizza Hut, has announced partnerships with Nvidia to develop AI technologies across its restaurant estate, signalling a broader move towards data-driven kitchens and smarter front-of-house systems. <p>A coding error inside Microsoft 365 Copilot briefly allowed the AI tool to read and summarise emails that businesses had explicitly marked as confidential.</p>



<p><strong>A Safeguard That Didn’t Hold</strong></p>



<p>In January, Microsoft detected an issue inside the “Work” tab of Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat. The problem, tracked internally as CW1226324, meant Copilot could process emails stored in users’ Sent Items and Drafts folders, even when those messages carried sensitivity labels designed to block AI access.</p>



<p>Inbox folders appear to have remained protected. The weakness sat in a specific retrieval path affecting Drafts and Sent Items.</p>



<p>Microsoft confirmed the bug was first identified on 21 January 2026. A server-side fix began rolling out in early February and is still being monitored across enterprise tenants.</p>



<p>The company said in a statement:</p>



<p><em>“We identified and addressed an issue where Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat could return content from emails labelled confidential, authored by a user and stored within their Draft and Sent Items in Outlook desktop.”</em></p>



<p>It added:</p>



<p><em>“This did not provide anyone access to information they weren’t already authorised to see. While our access controls and data protection policies remained intact, this behaviour did not meet our intended Copilot experience, which is designed to exclude protected content from Copilot access.”</em></p>



<p>That distinction matters. Microsoft’s position is that no unauthorised user gained access to restricted data. The issue was about Copilot processing information it was supposed to ignore.</p>



<p><strong>How Did This Happen?</strong></p>



<p>Copilot relies on what’s known as a retrieve then generate model. It first pulls relevant content from emails, documents or chats. It then feeds that material into a large language model to produce summaries or answers.</p>



<p>The enforcement point is the retrieval stage. If protected content is fetched at that stage, the AI will use it.</p>



<p>In this case, a code logic error meant sensitivity labels and data loss prevention policies were not correctly enforced for Drafts and Sent Items. Emails marked confidential were picked up and summarised inside Copilot’s Work chat.</p>



<p>That creates obvious concerns. Draft folders often contain unfinalised legal advice, internal assessments or sensitive negotiations. Sent Items frequently hold commercially sensitive exchanges.</p>



<p>Even if summaries stayed within the same user’s workspace, the principle of exclusion had failed.</p>



<p><strong>Why It Happened At An Awkward Moment</strong></p>



<p>Microsoft has been aggressively positioning Microsoft 365 Copilot as a secure enterprise AI assistant. Businesses pay a premium licence fee on top of their Microsoft 365 subscriptions. The selling point is productivity without compromising governance.</p>



<p>This incident seems to undermine that message.</p>



<p>It also comes amid heightened scrutiny of AI tools in regulated environments. The European Parliament recently banned AI tools on some worker devices over cloud data concerns. Regulators are watching closely.</p>



<p>Industry analysts have long warned that the rapid rollout of enterprise AI features increases the likelihood of control gaps and configuration errors. As vendors compete to embed generative AI deeper into core productivity tools, governance frameworks are often forced to catch up. This incident reinforces a wider concern that AI functionality can move faster than internal compliance oversight.</p>

<p><strong>How The Backdoors Work In Practice</strong></p>



<p>Sleeper agent backdoors are typically introduced through training time data poisoning or fine tuning poisoning, where an attacker inserts carefully crafted examples into a training dataset so that a trigger pattern is paired with a target behaviour. Over time, the model learns a conditional association between the trigger and the target behaviour while retaining normal responses elsewhere, which means routine prompts may not reveal anything abnormal. <p><strong>Three Ways To Tell Poisoned Models From Clean Ones</strong></p>

The risk increases when models are sourced from public hubs, copied into internal registries and treated as standard dependencies, since a single poisoned model can propagate into many applications through reuse.</p>



<p>Model reuse amplifies the impact because a single compromised model can be downloaded, fine tuned and redeployed thousands of times, spreading the backdoor downstream in ways that are difficult to trace. <p>Elon Musk’s AI chatbot Grok has become the focus of political, regulatory, and international scrutiny after users exploited it to generate non-consensual sexualised images, including material involving children, triggering urgent action from regulators and reopening a heated debate over online safety and free speech.</p>



<p><strong>What Triggered The Controversy?</strong></p>



<p>The row began in late December when users on X discovered that Grok, the generative AI assistant developed by Musk’s AI company xAI and embedded directly into the platform, could be prompted to edit or generate images of real people in sexualised ways.</p>



<p><strong>How?</strong></p>



<p>For example, by tagging the @grok account under images posted on X, users were able to request edits such as removing clothing, placing people into sexualised situations, or altering images under false pretences. In many cases, the resulting images were posted publicly by the chatbot itself, making them instantly visible to other users.</p>



<p>Reports quickly emerged showing women being&nbsp;<em>“undressed”</em>&nbsp;without consent and placed into degrading scenarios. In more serious cases, Grok appeared to generate sexualised images of minors, which significantly escalated the issue from content moderation into potential criminal territory.</p>



<p>The speed and scale of the misuse were central to the backlash. Examples circulated showing Grok producing dozens of degrading images per minute during peak activity, highlighting how generative AI can amplify harm far more rapidly than manual image manipulation.</p>



<p><strong>Why Grok’s Design Raised Immediate Red Flags</strong></p>



<p>It’s worth noting here that Grok differs from many standalone AI image tools because it is tightly integrated into a major social media platform (X/Twitter). Users don’t need specialist software or technical knowledge, and a single public prompt can lead to an AI-generated image being created and shared in the same conversation thread, often within seconds.</p>



<p><strong>Blurred The Line?</strong></p>



<p>It seems that this integration has blurred the line between user-generated content and platform-generated content, and while a human may type the prompt, the act of creating and publishing the image is carried out by the platform’s own automated system.</p>

<p>For example, under the Online Safety Act, it is illegal to create or share intimate or sexually explicit images without consent. Platforms are also required to assess and mitigate risks arising from the design and operation of their services, not just respond after harm has occurred.</p>



<p>Senior ministers have publicly backed Ofcom’s intervention. Technology Secretary Liz Kendall said she expected rapid updates and confirmed she would support the regulator if enforcement action was required, including the possibility of blocking access to X in the UK if it failed to comply with the law.</p>



<p><strong>Cross-Party Reactions</strong></p>



<p>The political response in the UK was swift, with senior figures from across Parliament condemning the use of Grok to generate non-consensual sexualised imagery and pressing regulators to act.</p>



<p>For example, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer described the content linked to Grok as&nbsp;<em>“disgraceful”</em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>“disgusting”</em>, and said the creation of sexualised images without consent was&nbsp;<em>“completely unacceptable”</em>, particularly where women and children were involved. He added that all options remained on the table as regulators assessed whether X was meeting its legal obligations.</p>



<p>Also, the Liberal Democrats called for access to X to be temporarily restricted in the UK while investigations were carried out, arguing that immediate intervention was necessary to prevent further harm to victims of image-based abuse and to establish whether existing safeguards were effective.</p>

<p>Caroline Dinenage, chair of the Culture, Media and Sport Committee, echoed those concerns, saying she had a&nbsp;<em>“real fear that there is a gap in the regulation”.</em>&nbsp;She questioned whether the law currently has the power to regulate AI functionality itself, rather than focusing solely on user behaviour after harmful material has already been created and shared.</p>
