Some Frequently Asked Questions
- How much will it cost me?
A - We will attempt to keep your cost as low as possible. Our standard rate is £20 per hour. If we can fix the issue within the first hour then the cost will be £20. If we have not resolved the issue within the first hour then we will discuss your options and agree a fixed price.
- Is there a call out charge?
A - If you are within a 15 Mile Radius of East Calder then there will be no Call Out charge. However a Call Out may not be necessary. If you have an Internet connection we can connect into your PC remotely and then diagnose the problem.
- If I need hardware can you supply it?
A - It depends on the hardware. In most cases we can provide hardware or advise on where you can purchase items safely.
- Do you provide lessons?
A - Yes, over the years we have helped a range of users to understand and use their computer. Contact us for a no obligation quotation.
- I have kids but I am concerned about them using the Internet can you help?
A - Yes, there are a number of solutions to consider. There is a very good free service that is easy to use and simple to set-up. Visit
open dns for more information. We can help implement this solution and many others.
- What operating systems do you support?
A - At this time Mear Technology are only providing support to Windows Operating Systems
- Windows 2000
- Windows XP
- Windows Vista
- All current Windows server platforms
- Will you need to take my computer away?
A - In some cases it is easier and quicker to resolve the issue (this often will be cheaper for you) if we remove you computer.
- I do not have any of the CD's and software that came with my computer. Is this a problem?
A - This depends on what CD's you have lost and whether or not you can supply proof that you own the software. In some cases, CD's are not required as the original software can be downloaded from the Internet. In other instances we may have a copy of the CD's at our office.
- I think I have a Virus/Trojan/Malware/Spyware/Adware on my PC what should I do?
A - Firstly do not panic. Try and think about when the last day was that your PC was ok and record the date.
- Try visiting Trend Micro HouseCall a free on-line scanner that can detect and remove many PC threats.
- Another option is to use Microsoft 'Malicious Software Removal Tool' which you can download from here
- If you are either unable to access the above site or cannot remove the threat try using a recovery point (only available on Windows XP and Windows Vista).
- Restart your computer.
- While the computer is starting up, press the F8 key repeatedly.
- A menu will appear, use your arrow keys to navigate down to “Safe mode with networking”. Press Enter/return key on your keyboard
- You will see lots of writing on the screen do not panic this is normal.
- You will see a message explaining that you are in safe mode. Select the option that allows you to access the system restore feature.
- Next you will see a calender showing some dates darker than others. Select a date from the calender when you know your computer was working. Click 'Next' and confirm that you wish to perform a system restore.
- Your computer will reboot.
- Once your system has restarted check that the Virus/Trojan/Malware/Spyware/Adware has been removed by running Trend Micro HouseCall again.
